The Final Countdown

Yeah, That’s Right. I Said It.

Typography and All That Jazz

In terms of typography I must say that the common page tends to fall in the category of mediocrity, much like Jessica Biel. Like 7th Heaven, I’m surprised that so many of these pages have been around as often as they have been.

Let us begin!

I’m too lazy to get a screen capture of this page so here’s the link instead:

Ah, yes, the great Northern Schools Federal Credit Union. Let me just get this out of the way- in terms of banks/credit unions is great! In terms of handling your cash they’re pretty great. Their lack of excessive fees and manipulation are to be commended- but that’s not what this is about.

It’s about the layout and font of their page. It looks, quite frankly, like a Microsoft Word Document that someone decided to spice up at the last second by peppering it with crappy clip art.  Furthermore the links are gigantic and abrasive.

However, I will let it go at that. It’s an Alaska webpage, and sadly, it’s much better than others I’ve seen.

Let’s move on to other things! This site I approve of! Could it be a bias? Probably.

Aside from the obvious informational value, I like the layout of the site. The font that’s used I feel is appropriate for the material that is being presented. It’s not too loud and in your face but all the colourful and attention grabbing links are a plus. Furthermore, if you don’t know what the hell the link is referring to you either get a sentence or a big fat (but not too big and fat) picture to let you know where you’re heading.

They have bigger font and big blue links for the … links and below them is in a smaller and simple black type a general synopsis of whatever article. MacWorld is much like this site in terms of content but I think this one is generally a better and more interesting layout.

So, eat it, MacWorld.
